Electroplating workers have been involved with different types of energy jobs in electroplating. Electroplating is an intricate process. The “platers” must first study specifications to determine which part of the unit is to be under plated, which kind of plating-operation to be used, and how thick the metal is placed.

They then mix a compound of the plating metal with chemicals to prepare the plating solution. They determine the volume of electric power necessary to carry the metal particles through the plating solution, and the length of time it will take to arrive at the targeted thick-level. At times they must design special racks to hold the product in the plating tank.

Part of their job in energy, the platers must prepare the product under plating operations. They clean it first, using a cleansing solution or by scouring, and then cover with lacquers, rubbers, or plastic tape any sections that are not to be plated. Then the article is placed in the tank for the specified time for the planting to reach a desired thickness. The article is suspended from the cathode rod, a negative terminal. A minute part of the metal is suspended from the anode, a positive terminal. As the plater moves the control area on the rectifier, the electric current flows from the anode to the cathode, causing the metal at the anode to decompose and that fee metal then to be deposited on the object attached to the cathode. The unit is then taken away from the tanks, under rinse, and put into dryness. When the article is finished, the plater must do an examination it for any defect, and must check the thick size of the plating-level. In other shops, the plater solely has the responsibility for the total operation, ordering the chemical and other supply sources to prepare and maintain the constant solution, following the plans, plating-products, and completing the job. Under these circumstances the plater often has helpers to supervise and may be called a plater supervisor.

In their energy employment, most electroplaters are hired as helpers to learn the trading skills with the assistance of the platers. It usually takes a minimum of 4 years in order to master the plater’s profession. Many employers limit the plater to a certain number of metal units because less time is required for this. This may prove to be unfortunate for the plate, because as a specialist one may find it difficult to transfer to other shops where other metals are used, if an opportunity should rise. Another method of fulfilling the requirements of the electroplating trade is through an apprenticeship program. Not too many young people have been trained this way, although this training provides a better all-around preparation for the job. It usually includes classroom introduction in the properties of metals, chemistry, and electricity as applied to plating along with regular on-the-job training. The apprentice is taken step-by-step through each phase of the plating process, and by the end of a certain required years of training the apprentice does cleaning and plating without supervision, makes solutions, examines results. The worker has become a fully qualified plater and is prepared to do one or all operations in the plating process or may qualify as a supervisor.

There are no special requirements of the energy job in electroplating trade, but as the whole plating process becomes more complex, the greater use of precision plating will require platers with a high degree of technical training and education. Furthermore, there are some advancement possibilities for the electroplater. When properly qualified, the plater may advance to supervisor. If experienced in work with a variety of metals, the plater may transfer to other shops that offer a promotion or higher pay or both. With some additional training, an electroplater may qualify in one of the newer methods of finishing metals, such as anodizing, which is increasing in importance in much manufacturing.
