Job Description:

Shell is taking significant action to strengthen its position as a leading energy company that will thrive in the transition and electrification of the global energy system. The Researcher energy systems modeling is an excellent opportunity to provide support for the development of analyses that are relevant to Shell’s New Energies and sectoral decarbonization ambitions. In the Integrated Systems Modelling team, there is a strong focus on the integration of renewable power across multiple technologies (e.g., solar PV, onshore wind, offshore wind, storage), as well as key power and heat loads (e.g., storage, industrial electrification, electrolyzers, chemical processes).

Where you fit in -

The energy transition requires the development of new business opportunities, together with technology and favorable economics to deploy scalable technologies and solutions that enable deep electrification of energy systems. The Researcher energy systems modeling is an exciting position that will advance R&D and demonstration projects through systems modeling of coupled systems (e.g., heat and electric power, feedstock, and electric power), as a means to leverage Shell’s integrated footprint and preserve value for the growing power business.

The Researcher Energy Storage will report to the Team Lead Long Range Research and is part of the GM-ship “Long Range Research & Experimentation”, and the Gas Processing and Conversion VP-ship. The Long-Range Research program aims to de-risk and deploy technology at a timeline longer than the usual business cycle which in principle rely on “off-the-shelf” technology. The program aims for the development of fundamentals and capabilities in new science areas, using collaborative efforts with academia, start-up companies, individual 3rd party technology providers and quite often supported by leveraged funding from governments.

The GM-ship “Long Range Research & Experimentation” includes a wide range of experts over the different areas of catalysis, electrochemistry, and modeling of future energy systems. Next to the core team, the platform also heavily depends on pulling in expertise from other capabilities in Shell, such as from the Biodomain, Computational and Data Sciences, Electrolysis Technology, and Energy Storage.

What is the role -

This role focusses on assessing the tradeoffs between types of firm generation and VRE storage, the role of synthetic CH4 as a renewable fuel for power applications, and the split between seasonal electricity storage and seasonal thermal storage to ensure sufficient renewable power and heat for industrial applications. Coordinating our world-class external research partnerships is part of the role. Affinity with renewables required, and a mechanical/(electro) Chemical Engineering/Systems Engineering background is required.

More specifically, your role will include:

•Support the development of process line-ups with renewable power feed and storage options and design verification through 3rd party vendors and technology providers

Proven ability to develop, maintain and evaluate high-fidelity models to perform techno-economic assessments and network simulation tools.
Maintain database of techno-economic information and conduct techno-economic analyses to place technology developments into appropriate context; develop & maintain fit-for-purpose business/market intelligence tools for solar fuels production
Work with experimental and computational scientists to provide feasibility assessments of integrated systems consisting of specific conversion processes to create commercially viable solutions for the production of fuels and chemicals from sustainable sources.
Represent Shell in selected external bodies and at conferences

•Conduct technical due diligence for LRR technologies in close collaboration with the business and provide as needed technical support

•Provide techno-economic analysis of new technologies/opportunities in the LRR space

•Management and development of program elements in the technology maturation funnel of LRR in the D0-D2 space

Collaboratively engage multidisciplinary local support/input – Emerging Technologies, Novel Catalysts, Materials & Corrosion, Process Evaluations, HSSE, Competitive Technical Intelligence, Computational Data Science, Projects, Discipline Engineering, etc.

•Deliver results against established key performance indicators for the LRR Platform in the New Energies Opportunity funnel for mid-term delivery.

•Develop understanding of the broader carbon and energy system, the energy transition, & the role of emerging technologies.

Skills and Requirements

What we need from you -

It is your excellent people skills to support a technical team of highly specialized experts and individuals towards achieving results that make a difference and guide the future direction of the company.

Furthermore, you will have:

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
At least three (3) working experience.
•Expertise in energy systems modeling techniques, power market knowledge
An understanding of technologies to be evaluated, such as: renewable power generation, power and energy storage, chemical processes, combined heat and power.
•MS/PhD in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering/Systems Engineering.
•Excellent relationship management skills. Ability to tactfully engage with internal and external stakeholders, including the Global Functions, the Technology Platforms in R&D, the Businesses, and the Project organizations.
•Strong learning focus, creativity, and persistence. Natural tendency to explore new possibilities and apply skills to solve unique and complex multi-disciplinary problems.
•Knowledge of the energy transition and carbon & energy systems
Affinity or experience with systems engineering approaches and optimization routines
•Capable of effective and impactful communications across topics, audiences, and formats at various organizational levels
Ability to develop, maintain and evaluate high-fidelity models to perform techno-economic assessments and network simulation tools.
